My 2026 ranking: the best car insurance in Switzerland

Smile is the best car insurance in Switzerland for my Mustachian situation. But the devil is in the details: online comparison tools mix different conditions, and the raw ranking is often misleading.

Here’s my top 3, with equal conditions (partial casco, CHF 0 deductible, free choice of garage):

#InsurerAnnual premiumNotes
1SmileCHF 448.70CHF 0 deductible, free choice of garage, 100% online
2SimpegoCHF 448.70Same price with Smile’s conditions (base price CHF 409.20 with CHF 300 deductible + mandatory partner garage)
3AllianzCHF 485.30Often competitive depending on the car model (based on reader feedback)

These are my prices. Yours will obviously vary depending on your car, where you live, and your claims history.

That’s why it’s important to compare yourself.

But if you follow a Mustachian lifestyle with a reliable second-hand car and partial casco only, you should get results close to this trio.

My car insurance pick for 2026 is once again Smile (formerly Smile Direct). I go into detail in my Smile review after several years of use, including my experience with an actual claim.

How to choose your car insurance as a Swiss Mustachian

Every year, I review my recurring expenses to optimize them as much as possible.

The goal?

Save as much as possible, invest the difference in the stock market or real estate, and use the passive income to become financially independent in Switzerland by 40 :)

So, recurring expenses obviously include my car insurance.

Being frugal by nature, any self-respecting Mustachian will go for a reliable and frugal car.

This lets me go with this car insurance strategy:

✅ What I keep in my car insurance

❌ What I uncheck (and why)

Bye bye all the fear-mongering add-ons:

There you go, pretty quick to apply :)

Comparing car insurance premiums in Switzerland (and the bonus.ch trap)

Every year, I use online comparison tools from bonus.ch (I don’t like Comparis.ch because it hides insurer names in the list view).

I enter my vehicle and driver information, along with the criteria I described above. And I let the machine do its thing!

And just like that, I note down the 3-4 best insurance offers.

Then, to make sure the comparison tool has up-to-date data, I go to each insurer’s website and redo the calculation on their own site.

Watch out for the trap: the raw ranking on bonus.ch mixes different deductibles and conditions. An insurer can appear cheaper simply because they have a higher deductible or impose a partner garage network.

A concrete example: Simpego shows CHF 409.20 on bonus.ch. While Smile shows CHF 448.70. So Simpego seems cheaper, except Simpego comes with a CHF 300 deductible and a mandatory partner garage. When you align the conditions (CHF 0 deductible + free choice of garage), Simpego costs... CHF 448.70. Exactly the same price as Smile.

That's why you always need to check directly on each insurer's website, with equal conditions.

Since early 2020, Smile has consistently been the cheapest car insurance based on my Mustachian criteria.

I checked again in August (because most contracts let you cancel with 3 months’ notice before year-end, otherwise they auto-renew for another year). And Smile is the cheapest car insurance in 2026 for a Mustachian.

Smile, Simpego, Allianz: my take on each insurer

Smile (my pick since 2020)

The cheapest with equal conditions, 100% online, free choice of garage, and customer service that proved itself when I needed it (windshield claim handled smoothly, no premium increase after).

Simpego (the solid alternative)

Simpego has been around since 2016 and has 4.0/5 on about 4'000 Google reviews. So it looks like a solid option.

The thing to know: by default, Simpego requires you to use their partner garage network. If you want to go to your own trusted mechanic, it’ll increase your annual premium. When you align the conditions with Smile (same deductible and free choice of garage), the price is identical.

If free choice of garage isn’t your priority, Simpego can be worth a look.

Allianz (worth checking for your vehicle)

Third in my ranking at CHF 485.30. Allianz comes up often in comparisons, based on what blog readers tell me, but the price varies a lot depending on the car model. So it’s worth checking for your situation.

Negotiate your premium (it works)

Quick tip that most people don’t bother with: if your insurer announces a premium increase at the end of the year, call and negotiate. It works.

Here’s what happened: Smile wanted to raise my premium this year. I threatened to leave. They kept the same price as last year. Five minutes via their chat, and dozens of francs saved per year.

And as usual, projected over a decade, if you invest that difference in the stock market, it adds up to several hundred CHF in your pocket!

FAQ Swiss car insurance

What is partial casco?

Partial casco insurance in Switzerland covers damage to your vehicle caused by events like theft, fire, hail, and animal collisions. But it doesn’t cover damage from traffic accidents where you’re at fault.

What is full casco?

Full casco is car insurance that covers all damage to your car, even damage you caused yourself in an accident. It also includes everything that partial casco covers (theft, fire, hail, etc.)

How long to switch car insurance in Switzerland?

The cancellation notice period is usually 3 months. Many insurers add an automatic annual renewal clause. So make sure to cancel before September 30, otherwise you’re locked in until the end of the following year.

Bonus.ch or Comparis for comparing?

Bonus.ch. Because Comparis hides insurer names in the list view, which makes the comparison useless. But in both cases, I recommend checking prices directly on each insurer’s website (see the trap with different conditions above).

Conclusion

The best car insurance in Switzerland depends on your situation, obviously. But if you’re reading this blog, you’re Mustachian (= second-hand car, partial casco, no useless add-ons), and the best choice for us has been Smile since 2020.

And the process for doing your own comparison is simple:

  1. Go to bonus.ch to get an initial ranking
  2. Then check the premiums on each insurer’s website with equal conditions

And if one year your insurer wants to raise your premium, negotiate before giving in.

And you, which Swiss car insurance are you with?
